When I was growing up, I knew of only two things that entertained me: 1) toys and 2) TV. I thought, man, these are all a kid needs to spend some quality entertainment time. But, on one humid summer afternoon, everything changed.

You see, I never had a gaming system before my parents bought one for my brother and I that day. I was mostly in love with cartoons and toys, sort of like a teenager being obsessed with iPhone and txt messages. But, when I got my first ever Super Nintendo (SNES), my entertainment of choice was forever changed. But, it wasn’t just the SNES that did it; it was the game that came with it, Super Mario World. That’s right, World, not Bros. Why the difference? Because I had played Super Mario Bros. at my friends before, but it never got my attention that much. It was, in a way, too simple for my young sophisticated taste. You had Mario, who jumped, occasionally threw down some fireballs, and moved from left to right. There just wasn’t enough for me to keep playing. It is very addicting just like poker online site. You will never run out of things to do in super Mario world. It is certainly one of the best games that could entertain you. You see, the world of supermario is not yet over. It is still kicking and very much existing.

Yea that’s right, Mario was no longer adventuring alone in his world. He had a kick-ass buddy that could save him in need, and give Mario additional moves. But the thing that gave me the most interest was the not-so-linear game play. Maybe it was my boredom with the linear play of Super Mario Bros., but World gave Mario and I the ability to explore the game’s world through various world levels to play. Needless to say, I felt in love with the game and could not let go, even with my parents screaming at me to turn it off from time to time.

Of course, in time, I grew to enjoy other, more sophist aced games, like CounterStrike and World of Warcraft. However, there are times, when I still look back at that gray system in my attic, and can’t help but be amazed by how gorgeous Super Mario World was, and still is.

On Saturday, March 20, 2010, the first day of Spring was also the Game Day for the Dungeons and Dragons 4th edition Player’s Handbook 3, and quite a game day it was. Getting a look at the new classes was a lot of fun, and now that we finally have psionics back in the game, a lot of us who were anxiously waiting are relieved.

The big offering this time around is the long-awaited debut of psionics to 4e. Until now, players have had to whet their whistles with the playtests in Dragon Magazine, but only up to Level 10. Player’s Handbook 3 establishes the Psionic power source into the 4e world, and as with the Primal power source before it, it comes with some more elaboration on the history behind it. During the long-ago age of the Dawn Wars between the gods and the primordials, there existed a powerful gate between reality and the Far Realm. This gate, according to the stories passed down, was eventually discovered by a group of gods and opened, loosing the horrors of the Far Realm. Turning their attention temporarily from the threat of the primordials, Ioun and Pelor destroyed the gate and sealed the rift in reality. In the wake of the incursion of the Far Realms, psionic powers began to manifest, allegedly as the universe’s natural defense against the incursion of the tear in space.

Player’s Handbook 3 introduces four new races to players, some formerly monsters or races from older editions made more PC-friendly, and others entirely original creatures altogether. For revamped monster races, we have the githzerai and the minotaur making their long-awaited jump from Dragon Magazine to the core. The shardminds and the wilden are entirely new creatures to the DnD canon. In addition to the new races, Wizards has picked up a new way of doing racial ability modifiers. Each race has one primary modifier, and then the player is given a choice between two other modifiers. For example, Githzerai all get a +2 to Wisdom, but a choice between a +2 in Dexterity or Intelligence.

Shardminds are constructs who arose from the physical and psychic residue from the destruction of the Far Realms gate. Their bodies are composed of crystal, and are infused with psionic energy. Their ability modifiers cover Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma, encompassing the whole of the “mental” stats. Obviously, though still constructs, they represent a very different type of construct that the Warforged. Wilden, on the other hand, are quite clearly primal in their origin. Wilden are fey creatures who are commonly considered to be the primal spirits’ response to the incursion of creatures from the Far Realm. The wilden are plant-like fey creatures, whose bodies are formed of wood, leaves and vines. As might be expected, they favor the druid and shaman.

After the races come the real meat of the book: the Psionic classes. The new psionic classes are: the Ardent, a leader who aids his allies and hinders his enemies by controlling emotions and thoughts, the Battle-Mind, a defender that uses psionic magic to manipulate his foes and turn aside attacks, the Monk, a striker who frankly needs no explanation, and the Psion, a controller who uses her mental powers to afflict her enemies and wreak havoc on the battlefield. The Seeker, a primal controller, and the Runepriest, a divine leader, fill out the classes. Out of all of the new classes, my personal favorite on Game Day was most definitely the monk. Between the flexibility and the sheer joy of landing a flying kick on something halfway across the battlefield, the monk is hard to beat out. Not to downplay the other classes, of course.

One of the big themes of the PHB3 is flexibility, especially in the psionic classes. Instead of having the traditional set of encounter attack powers every few levels, psionic characters (except for the monk) instead have a pool of power points, which they can use to augment their at-will powers, spending as many or as few as they want. This makes them far more versatile and able to adapt to situations on the fly than their counterparts from other power sources. Your pool of power points increases over time, and you gain and lose at-will powers as usual throughout your progression. It all comes together to create a really interesting effect. Which the system is a bit more involved than the traditional 4e power structure, it yields a lot to an experienced player, newbies be warned. Overall, the PHB3 is definitely worth spending your money on, and it’ll make a great addition to your table.

All in all, a worthy debut for Dungeons and Dragons where the level playing experience is quite an exciting venture to dive into with occasional Domino99 vibes in the bargain is what makes it riveting to overview again and again with something new to learn each time.

Why It’s Stupid to Play Online Poker!

In case you’re wondering, yes I was stupid enough to play offshore online poker for real money. Here’s what happened to me:

I registered at three offshore online poker sites, ParadisePoker.com, PokerStars.com, Judi online, and FullTiltPoker.com ParadisePoker.com were running a “Free Roll” “Texas Holdem” million-dollar tournament. “Free Roll” means you don’t have to pay the entry fee, but you can only enter once without paying an entry fee. I entered the tournament and sat down at my computer to play. I was winning for a while, then I was dealt with “Pocket 10s.” In “Texas Holdem” everyone is dealt two cards face down called “The Pockets.” After a round of betting, three cards are dealt face-up on “The Board.” This is called “The Flop.” The three cards in “The Flop” are common to everyone at the table’s hands. After another round of betting another card called, “The Turn”, is added to “The Board.”. After another round of betting another card, called “The River” is added to “The Board”. After another round of betting is finished, the cards of the last player who “Raised” or bet are revealed. If the next player in line has a better hand, his “Pockets” are revealed. If it is a losing hand the player can either reveal his “Pockets” or “Muck.” “Muck” means the player lost and chose not to reveal his “Pockets.”

With “Pocket” 10s I decided to make a “value bet.” A “value bet” is a moderate bet designed to get the other players to “Call” rather than “Fold” to a big bet. One player called and one player went “All In.” A pair of tens is very good “Pockets.” I decided to either win a big pot or “Bust Out” of the tournament. “The Flop” was King – 10 – 7 so I had three tens, an excellent hand. “The Turn” was a 7, my hand still looked good. “The River” was a Jack and my hand didn’t look so good. 10 – Jack – Queen – King made a “Straight” a good possibility. The first player revealed his “Pockets” for two pair, Kings and Queens. I revealed my 10s for three of a kind. The player who forced us “All In” revealed A – 5 for an Ace-high “Straight”, and two of us were out of the tournament. The “Lucky Idiot” who won the pot didn’t have, even a decent shot at winning the hand when he went “All In”, he only had Ace – 5. The Player with “Pocket” King – Queen actually had a better probability of winning than the “Lucky Idiot” had. What kind of idiot gambles his tournament life on Ace – 5 “Pockets?”

I went back to playing for “Play money chips.” This all happened before the law that prevents banks from transferring funds to the offshore online poker sites took effect. I found that the play on PokerStars.com was, in my opinion, better than the play on the other two so I played there. After turning 1,000 chips into 100,000 chips I decided to have my bank transfer $50.00 to PokerStars.com and use my “skill” to win some money. I played for real money, but my “luck” was terrible and I lost it. I played for “play money chips again and soon turned the 100,000 chips into over 550,000 chips. I decided to give it another try. By this time the law that prevents banks from transferring funds to the offshore gambling sites had taken effect so I bought a cashier’s check and sent it to PokerStars.com.

When the $50.00 was deposited in my PokerStars.com account I began to play for real money again. Again, my “luck” went south. There was a one-half hour or so stretch where I had “pocket” Aces twice and “Pocket Kings once and didn’t win any of the three hands. I remember thinking about what terrible luck I had. I don’t remember if the winner forced me “All in” before “The Flop” or not, but I dropped most of the $50.00 during that stretch.

The last hand I played for real money was “Pocket” Ace – 3 of diamonds. The Flop was 8 – 7 – 6 of diamonds. I made a bet and one player went “All in.” My first thought was “Damn, does he have a straight flush?” I decided to chance it since I didn’t have much left anyway so I put the rest of the money I had into the pot. “The Turn” was a “deuce”, and The River was an 8. The other player turned over 8 – 7 for a full house and beat my Ace-high flush. What kind of idiot bets “All In” on two pair when looking at a probable “Flush” on “The Board” when all he has is two pair? Recently it hit me! Not an idiot at all, what if the game is rigged?

My profession is a computer programmer and I should have spotted the “Ruse”, but I’ve always been naïve and trusted people until they give me a reason not to. I try not to trust people, but old habits are hard to break. The gambling sites could have special software that allows them to see what “Pockets” everybody has and can even choose what cards fall on “The Flop”, “The Turn”, and “The River.” They don’t even have to have a real person play and win. “The Ringer” at the table could even be a computer-generated player. They are smart enough to make sure that “The Ringer” doesn’t win every hand, but even if it’s only programmed to win the statistically probable one in nine hands, they have nothing invested in the game and end up taking money from “The pigeons” at the table. What if it wasn’t my skill at all that allowed me to turn 1,000 play money chips into over half a million? What if they were letting me win to lure me into sending them some money? A little bit sobering to realize that you are probably not as good a poker player as you thought you were.

And, what about the “Free Roll” tournament? Using special software would allow them to “Bust Out” the “Free Roll” players and lure them into sending in entry fees to try again. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the online tournament winners are “Rigged” to win before the tournaments even begin.

Even if the poker site is on “the Up and UP” there is another scenario that I have worked out. Buy a four computer router for under $50.00 and invite two or three friends to bring their laptops over to play online poker. All set in the same room with their computers hooked up to the same poker site and the same poker table. Just imagine what an advantage three or four players co-operating at a table have over the other players. Of course, you make sure that the cities that display when someone puts their mouse pointer on your “Avatar” are different. The other players would get suspicious if three or four players at the table were from the same city.

I’m sure that there are college students trying exactly that at their dorms “Fleecing” people who are stupid enough to play online poker for real money! I don’t believe it does them any good though. How much do you need to sit down at a cash table? This answer is subjective and depending on where you look will depend on the answer you receive. Most pros say you need anywhere between 30 and 50 times your big blind. If you are playing no limit Texas holdem for blinds of one and two dollars, then most pros suggest you sit down with around $100. However, you will often see people buy in for 100 or 200 times the big blind. For limit poker, the pros suggest buying in for around 30 times the big bet. This means if you are playing 2-4 limit, you should sit down with around 120 dollars. However, you might see players sitting down with 20 dollars at a time. You may want to sit down with half of that. The choice is really up to you. It depends on how much you are willing to risk and what kind of game you play. Do you like to have a big stack and bully the other players around? If that’s the case, then buy in at the maximum and make those buying in at the minimum pay (almost all tables will have a minimum and a maximum requirement). With the advent of the strong two club bid the strong three no trump opener was no longer needed. Thus was born the gambling three no trump bid.

The gambling three no trump bid requirements are very simple:

The bidder must have a solid seven card minor suit and no outside entry. It is now very easy for responder to gauge the trick taking potential of the hand. If he thinks it has a good chance of making he simply passes. If he thinks three no trump is a bad proposition he bids four clubs. Opener passes this with clubs or bids four diamonds to correct. With an interest in slam responder may bid four diamonds. This asks opener to show a singleton. With a singleton heart or spade he bides four of the corresponding suit. If he has a singleton in the other minor he bids four no trump. With no singleton he simply bids five of his minor.

Note that there is merit in bidding four no trump with no singleton and five clubs with a singleton in the other minor. When slam is not in the offering it allows the partnership to try for the game at the four level. But just like playing Dominoqq, it does require a bit more memory work, however.

On very rare occasions responder may bid four hearts or four spades over three no trump This is strictly to play and opener should pass.

Gonzaga’s days as an NCAA Tournament Cinderella team are over and as an NCAA Tournament # 8 seed, Gonzaga will not surprise NCAA Tournament #1 seed Syracuse. Syracuse should have their center, Arinze Onuaku in good health for this and he may be the key to making Gonzaga stay outside.

Gonzaga is a team that can get hot shooting from the outside and if they do, it could spell trouble for Syracuse. This game will be closer than many think, look for it to be won on the last shot of the game and Gonzaga will cover the 3.5 points.

2:20 PM Ohio State -5 versus Georgia Tech

NCAA Tournament #2 seed Ohio State, skated through their first round game and facing NCAA Tournament #10 seed Georgia Tech may be a nice draw for Ohio State. A game against Oklahoma State may have been a tougher draw than the ACC’s Georgia Tech.

Ohio State will need to get out early on Georgia Tech but once they put them behind by ten, they should cruise to and easy 10-15 point victory. Take Ohio State -5.

2:30 PM Maryland -1 versus Michigan State

NCAA tournament #4 seed Maryland wasn’t given much love in fact when Dan Patrick had Gary Williams on his radio show Thursday he told Williams, “I hate to tell you coach but I am taking Houston over Maryland on my bracket.” Williams laughed and said, “That’s okay I will remind you about that after we win.”

Maryland draws a tough game against #5 seed Michigan State, the defending NCAA Tournament runner ups. This version of the Michigan State Spartans is not nearly as strong as last years team. The spread tells the story of this game. It will be a hard fought win for either team. This game is a coin flip and games like this shouldn’t be bet. Stay away from this game and don’t bet.

2:40 PM West Virginia -6 versus Missouri

NCAA Tournament #10 seed Missouri was an 11.5 point underdog to Clemson and now they are only a 6 point underdog to NCAA Tournament #2 seed West Virginia. Interesting line choice on this game. West Virginia struggled early in their first round game and Missouri had a hard fought win over heavy favorite Clemson. It looks like a little too much respect for Missouri. Take West Virginia -6.

2:50 PM Wisconsin -3.5 versus Cornell

Wisconsin is the best defensive team left in the NCAA Tournament, coming in as an NCAA Tournament #4 seed Wisconsin draws Cornell after they beat Temple who was a 5 point favorite over them. Cornell came into the NCAA Tournament as a #12 seed and now will again be the underdog as the face Wisconsin. Another spread that gives a little too much respect to a high seed in Cornell. Take Wisconsin -3.5.

4:50 PM Pittsburgh -2.5 versus Xavier

Xavier has been a trendy pick in NCAA Tournaments past but now everyone knows who Xavier is and how to say the name. Xavier came in as an NCAA Tournament #6 seed and as they prepare to take on Pittsburgh, an NCAA Tournament #3 seed they are again in their familiar underdog position. Maybe Xavier will feel more comfortable as the dog in this game. The spread is too short to take Xavier in this game or make any bet.

5:00 PM Texas A M; versus Purdue Pick Em

Purdue has a chip on their shoulder, especially after everyone picked them to out in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Purdue was first downgraded by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee to a #4 seed and then to top that off all the NCAA commentators were picking #13 seed Sienna to beat them.

Purdue went out and beat Sienna and now have a tough Texas A M; team that is an NCAA Tournament #5 seed. Well Purdue may be motivated but without Robbie Hummel, Purdue will fall to Texas A M.; Bet Texas A M.;

5:15 PM Duke -6 versus California

California played an awesome first half against a disappointing Louisville team and kept their distance through the second half as Louisville could never get on track. NCAA Tournament #1 seed Duke, wasn’t challenged in their first round game and California, an NCAA Tournament #8 seed will be a tough challenge for the number one seed in the South Region.

California will be in this game until the end and they have a great chance for the upset. California will cover the 6 points over Duke and don’t be surprised if the win outright.
